Buy Rite Food Center, Inc. was established by Virgil Wahlman and Harvey Jacobs and opened in a 5,888 square foot rented building in south Milford in November 1963. In 1971 Wahlman purchased Jacobs' interest and constructed a new 9,600 building in north Milford. Over the years the building was expanded 5 times to its current size of 20,000 square feet.
In 1996, Virgil Wahlman was honored as Iowa's Grocer of the Year by the Iowa Grocery Industry Association.
In April 2001, the business was purchased by Wahlman's sons, Neal and Eric, and long-time employee Tom Arends, and the name was changed to BUY RITE FOODS. Eric and Tom are the on-site managers, while Neal lives in Minneapolis, MN and serves in an advisory capacity. All three men are graduates of the local high school and Eric and Tom are life-long Milford residents.
In December 2006, the interior of the building received a major facelift with new paint and the installation of carpet and designer tile. The produce department and deli seating area were completely renovated, as were the restroom facilities. A new parking lot was installed in September 2006, along with a completely new dairy department in November 2005.
Buy Rite Foods purchased the former Market Street Market in Lake Park, IA in May 2008. Extensive renovations and remodeling took place in the summer and a Grand Opening was held in early October 2008. The business operates under the same name as our Milford store - Buy Rite Foods.
